Special Interest Days
are held each year to enjoy looking at a
subject in greater depth than is possible
in a lecture, allowing a more "hands-on"
approach, giving members the opportunity
to consider and discuss original material
with an expert.

A Jewellery Study
Session with Susan Rumfitt
Harrogate based jewellery expert Susan
Rumfitt gave a superb 'hands on' special
interest afternoon after our November
morning lecture meeting at the Downe Arms
Country Hotel. She continued the theme of
her fascinating morning lecture on
imitation jewellery entitled 'Faking It,'
by passing a series of black velvet trays
among the 31 attending members. Each tray
was laden with small pieces of jewellery
from her collection and members were given
guidance sheets to study. They were able
to use little jewellers magnifying glasses
or loupes to examine the settings, to
identify precious stones and to search for
any interesting marks and were asked to
arrange the items of jewellery in order of
age. Susan moved around each group, where
she identified and offered interesting
facts and observations about the objects.
She also dated and identified several
items brought in by members. Susan's
knowledge, lively enthusiasm and bubbly
personality made this a very jolly and
enjoyable afternoon for all.
