February 2025: Traditional Embroidery in a Modern World

To be held on 19 February 2025

Traditional Embroidery in a Modern World looks at the place of embroidery in society today, how it is used across various areas and industries, embroidery as an art form and making a viable career from hand embroidery. Across the military, wedding and fashion industries see examples, discover the techniques used and hear some of Jessica Aldred’s personal stories about working as a hand embroiderer in this fast-paced world.

Jessica Aldred

We have had the pleasure of listening to Jessica Aldred speak to us before, when she told us about her career in embroidery from training at the Royal School of Needlework, working in costume at the Royal Opera House, teaching needlework in a high security prison and being a member of the team who embroidered the wedding dress and veil for the now Princess of Wales! She has also demonstrated embroidery to HRH Her Majesty The Queen and taught at the V&A Museum as part of their exhibition ‘Frida Kahlo: Making Her Self Up’.
